Micanti awarded for antifouling foil

Unlike traditional copper antifouling coatings, the company’s non-toxic antifouling adhesive foil, which lasts for more than five years, is effective in all conditions whether a vessel is moored or sailing. The foil’s fibres create a textured surface which acts like a physical barrier to prevent organisms such as mussels, barnacles and algae, from settling on the hull of a vessel.

“Since 2012, the product has been commercially available to ships worldwide and the launch was very successful. In the past two years we noted so-called ‘double digit growth’ and as a company we developed very fast,” said Eric Pieters, co-owner.

“The biggest successes are achieved in the Middle East in the professional shipping industry. But we are expanding steadily towards a global clientele – Asia, America and Europe have shown a lot of interest in Thorn-D. Winning a prestigious title such as The Chamber of Commerce’s SME Innovation Top 100 is a great incentive for us,” he added.

The foil’s fibres also smooth water flow over the hull to ensure there is no loss of speed or wasted fuel and can be applied to quayside structures in and around ports.

Accredited by Lloyd’s Register, ABS and Bureau Veritas, the foil is also environmentally friendly as it works without emitting toxic chemicals which harm marine life.
