Jotun wins Triple-E contract

The Triple-Es are currently the world’s largest container ships – said to be renowned as much for their energy efficiency as their size. By upgrading to HPS with Jotun’s high quality SeaQuantum X200 antifouling coating, the Triple-E ships are expected to reinforce their energy efficiency advantage.

Keeping under water hull surfaces smooth and clean is crucial to Maersk Line’s efforts to minimise fuel costs and GHG emissions.

Maersk Line’s order for a series of 20 Triple-E vessels, includes 10 now already in or entering service, and a further 10 under construction at DSME in South Korea. The vessels are 400m long, 59m wide and 73m high, boasting an 18,000 teu capacity. They each weigh in at 165,000 dwt.

Jotun launched its HPS (hull performance solutions) package for newbuildings, aimed at yards building eco-design vessels, and designers and owners looking for improved EEDI and ship performance in 2013.

The system is based on Jotun Marine Coatings’ SeaQuantum X200, a low-friction antifouling claimed to maximise initial and lifetime performance, with three add-on upgrade components – a ‘smooth application pack’ to achieve low roughness at speed trial stage, technical service and optimised anti-corrosion; an ‘outfitting protection package’ to ensure a clean fouling-free hull on sea trials.
