The new ferry, Texelstroom, is being built for Dutch operator Teso and will run between Texel Island and the Holland mainland. The ‘new generation’ vessel, which will transport up to 1,750 persons and 350 vehicles, will be powered by either low sulphur diesel or CNG and will feature over 700m² of solar panels to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels. Texelstroom’s advanced energy management system will use 252 Corvus Energy AT 6500 48V lithium ion modules.

The 1.6MW battery capacity will be used to increase efficiency and for back-up power. Such a large battery reserve means that the entire ferry can run on battery power alone in case of emergency. Corvus says this energy storage system (ESS) also enables the designers to specify smaller generators, since the batteries can be used to provide short power-up and power-down capabilities.
Class approved by Lloyd’s Register, the Corvus energy system is said to be the only Type Approved EDD for marine vessels in the market.
