SYM increases worldwide services portfolio

The first area, technical services, includes, through the SYM Engineering technical office, ship design, naval architecture and marine projects, surveys and certification, and now incorporates load test by water bags for cranes, davit, derricks or life boats and ultrasonic thickness measurement by means of multi-echo equipment.

The wet docking services area handles management of afloat and emergency repairs, inspection and underwater surveys (IACS approved) to steel repairs, mechanical and electrical jobs or maintenance. The group has outfitting piers and workshops in Barcelona and the Dominican Republic.

The third area, electrical and electronic maintenance offers a range of specialised services for ship owners worldwide, plus spare parts and equipment supply, using a team with long experience of marine electronics.

The increased work has come about partly through SYM entering into successful joint ventures, such as its partnership with Miami-based Coral Sun Marine (CSMC), which handles electrical propulsion and electronic equipment, including catering for the cruise ship market. Recently SYM signed a joint venture agreement with another marine electronics services specialist, Medenisa, based in Barcelona.

SYM has offices in Barcelona, Santo Domingo, Miami and Port of Spain, and describes itself as a marine technical management company that offers worldwide service to shipyards and ship owners based on providing tailor-made solutions. It has a team comprising more than 30 naval architects, marine engineers, senior estimators, project managers and technical surveyors.
