MAN power for largest boxship

The ship has now completed its sea trials, and is notable for being the largest yet container ship. According to MAN, its main engine is physically, the largest engine ever constructed, although Maersk Line and Wärtsilä might claim that title for the 81MW 14RTFlex96C engines of the Emma Maersk class. The MAN contender is normally rated for 69,720kW at 84rpm, although it has been de-rated to 56,800kW for this application.

The new container vessel was constructed at Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea. Licensee HHI-EMD, Hyundai’s engine-building division, built the engine. Previously, the largest MAN Diesel & Turbo designed engine was a 12K98MC7.
