More Havyard icebreakers on order

The Havyard 843 Ice design has been developed by Havyard Design and Solutions in connection with a contract that was signed last year. The 86.7m vessels will have the DNV ice class Icebreaker Ice 10 and Winterizes Cold (-30˚C), meaning they can break ice that is more than 1m thick and that it has a system to prevent icing of the vessel. The vessels are otherwise designed for anchor-handling, towing and for use in emergency response operations in connection with oil spills and rescue services.

“When we signed contract last year, we had great expectations of the market in the Arctic, and the new contracts show that our strategy has been the correct one,” said Tor Leif Mongstad, executive vice president sales.

“We have other icebreaker designs in our portfolio in addition to the Havyard 843 Ice design, and we can quickly adapt our designs to customer needs. We strongly believe that we will see more such contracts going forward,” he added.

Havyard Power and Systems, which is based in Ålesund, will deliver the electrical engineering, automation and alarm systems and Havyard concept bridge. Norwegian Electric Systems, where Havyard owns just under 40% of the shares, will deliver electric motors, generators and electrical switchboards.

Havyard’s Leirvik yard in Sogn is said to have built most icebreaking offshore vessels in the world. Since 1995, the yard has delivered seven offshore icebreakers, in addition to the three that are currently on order.

The new vessels are scheduled for delivery in Q4 2016.
