Krylov to supply electric propulsion for icebreakers

The contract value is estimated at RUB 3 billion (US$80 million), which makes it one of the largest orders for ship equipment in Russia in recent years.

The electric propulsion systems will be installed on the 22220 class nuclear icebreakers. According to an official spokesperson of Baltic Shipbuilding, each system comprises two generators, each of 36MW, three 20MW propulsion motors, frequency converters for controlling the rotation of the propeller shaft, matching transformers and switchgear operating at 10kV.

Under the terms of the contract the first system should be supplied to the plant in June 2016, with the second scheduled for delivery in July 2017.

Baltic Shipbuilding is currently part of JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation, and specialises in construction of surface ships, ice-class vessels with nuclear and diesel-electric propulsion, and floating nuclear power and desalination plants. Its order book value is estimated at RUB 150 billion (US$4.5 billion). Among the largest orders are three nuclear icebreakers of 60MW power, a 25MW diesel-electric icebreaker, and the world’s first floating nuclear heat and power plant. The company’s revenue in 2013 amounted to RUB 4.86 billion, with net profit of RUB 333.6 million.

Recently the Baltic plant announced that it is to build Mistral class amphibious assault ships, as the original plan for France to supply these is likely to be suspended due to political issues.
