Norwegian Electric Systems strikes Estonian deal

The deal represents the first newbuild car ferry installations for NES, which beat competition from companies in Germany and the US to win the contract. The ferries will be built at yards in Poland (Remontowa) and Turkey (Sefine).

Two years ago NES upgraded Norwegian ferry Olav Dun, its only previous experience in the ferry market. The company noted that with the low price of oil affecting business in its core OSV and jack-up vessel business, “it was important to diversify into other markets less vulnerable to the price of oil”.

Fridtjof Erichsen, sales manager, Norwegian Electric Systems said: “The competition to supply the electric propulsion systems for these vessels has been fierce but Norwegian Electric Systems was able to offer the best technical solution along with highly competitive commercial terms.”

Norwegian Electric Systems will supply equipment including generators, swtichboard, main propulsion motors and Quadro Drive frequency converters, its BOSS black out safety system and RAS remote assistance system. The company will also undertake project management, electrical studies and analysis, system integration and commissioning.
