EU invests in Scandline conversions

The funding under the EU’s TEN-T transport infrastructure improvement programme will help Scandlines meet the SOx emission limit introduced in the Baltic Sea this year. The hybrid propulsion systems will cut SOx emissions by 99%, particulate matter by 88% and CO2 by 15%.

The conversions will be made to ferries plying the route between Rødby and Puttgarden. They will be completed by the end of the year.

The initiative was selected for EU funding with the assistance of external experts under one of TEN-T’s priority projects dedicated to improving marine transport, named ‘Motorways of the Sea’. Its implementation will be monitored by the European Commission’s Innovation and Networks Executive Agency.

The project will be implemented and managed by Scandlines Deutschland and Scandlines Danmark, which will act as maritime and port/terminal operators.

Scandlines has already converted two out of four ro-pax vessels plying the route, TEN-T reported.
