UK Chamber highlights slow efficiency technology uptake
According to a recent UCL survey, just a few key technologies had been implemented with only incremental improvements in efficiency.
The event took place on 19 November 2015 and recognised that so far measures that have been taken will not be enough to limit global warming to a 2oC maximum by 2050.
It was suggested that investment in technological improvements could be undermined by the current weak market conditions and low fuel prices. This would make it harder to prove that any investment was economically viable.
Within recent years the industry has taken a holistic approach to improve the energy efficiency of new and existing vessels by effectively optimising ship operations to do more with less.
This included new hull designs, optimising the design of the bulbous bow, retrofitting better propeller systems and adopting tools to gauge improvements. These measures have all been employed.
Despite this there are still a number of barriers preventing an optimal transition to a low-carbon future.
At the event, chamber members supported a proactive approach to reducing emissions which will enable the industry to respond to future changes.
It said the decarbonisation requires sectors across the industry to share information and work together towards common goals.
