COSCO enlists ABS for trans-Arctic projects

Parties from both companies signed a cooperation agreement in Shanghai with the aim of developing ice-classed vessel types suitable for trans-Arctic shipping.

This will help enable the Asian shipping company to expand its use of the Northeast Passage for more regular trading and explore navigation in the Northwest Passage.

Eric Kleess, president and COO of ABS Greater China Division, said: “ABS is excited to work with COSCO to develop this pioneering trading route.”

Changing climate conditions have opened new opportunities in previously unnavigable areas and in 2013 the first Chinese merchant ship, Yong Sheng, successfully navigated the Northeast Passage.

Using the Northern Sea Route for a voyage between principal Asian and European ports reduces the distance by nearly 4,000 miles compared to the traditional route through the Suez Canal.

Captain Meijiang Cai, director of COSCO Safety & Technology Supervision Division, said: “We are proud of the successful navigation through Arctic waters and the contribution we are making to trans-Arctic shipping.”
