MAN Diesel aims for Japanese ferry market

JFE, which has built SEMT Pielstick’s PC engines – acquired by MAN in 2006 – under license since 1964, will now also build a range of MAN common rail (CR) and dual fuel (DF) four-stroke engines.

The license covers 32/44CR, 35/44DF, 48/60CR and 51/60DF engine types, and applies to newbuild projects to be deployed on Japanese domestic trade routes, and where the shipyards and shipowners involved are located in Japan.

The CR engines cover a power range of 3,600-21,600kW and are suitable for both HFO and MDO. On customer request they can be equipped with ECOMAP capability, allowing each engine to be programmed for optimal efficiency at different load points – allowing extra flexibility for multi-engine configurations.

The DF engines cover a power range of 3,180-18,000kW and can be operated on Otto (when burning LNG) or Diesel (when burning HFO, MDO or MGO) cycles. The cycles can be switched without interruption anywhere between 15-100% load, and when operating on the Otto cycle the engines satisfy IMO Tier III NOx requirements without exhaust after-treatment.
