Denmark to study real-time condition monitoring

Under a project established by Aalborg-based telecoms company GateHouse, data from sensors monitoring equipment condition and emission levels will be transmitted continuously to shore, enabling authorities, ship owners and equipment manufacturers to process and act on real-time information.

The project is supported by the Danish Maritime Fund and will involve partners including ship owner Uni-Tankers, engineering and software company Logimatic and two major Danish equipment manufacturers. Other ship owners will also help to test the system.

Stakeholders with access to the data can use the information for purposes including ongoing optimisation of machinery, more efficient maintenance, fuel consumption optimisation and continuous emission monitoring.

Troels Blicher Danielsen, deputy director general of the Danish Maritime Authority, said: !In the near future, many ships will be online all the time, exactly as is already the case on land. This presents a business opportunity for innovative companies in Blue Denmark, and the Danish Maritime Authority wants to contribute to this by taking part in this pilot project. If we can simultaneously demonstrate that the technology makes it easier to continuously monitor ships’ emissions of, for example, sulphur, then it could be a big step towards more effective enforcement.”
