ABS opens Athens technology centre

The increasing complexity of mechanical and cyber-enabled systems onboard vessels means that a more advanced approach to address design and construction is required, the organisation noted. The new centre will provide a research and development capability to help address industry issues, aligning with local and world-leading universities and research centres.

Elias Kariambas, director of the ABS Global Ship Systems Center, is leading the new facility’s team in nearly 40 projects addressing topics including cyber safety, shafting and propulsion, LNG as fuel, control and automation, engine operations and maintenance, vessel performance, and emission controls, among others.

The new Hellenic Technical Committee will be chaired by Christopher Leontopoulos, technology manager, ABS. The committee will comprise more than 20 representatives of owners, operators and owner associations.
