Aegir augments reality for seal and thruster servicing

One app allows engineers to examine a stern tube seal in detail as they virtually walk around the ship’s propulsion system using a tablet device. A second app uses HoloLens goggles to give detailed information about an overhauled bow thruster – including observing spin test performance, unit temperature, component condition – including enabling closer examination of bearings, shaft and seal.

Rob de Wit, knowledge and quality manager, Aegir Marine, said: “We are busy incorporating this kind of learning tool in our own new Aegir Marine Academy. In the future, the HoloLens can even be used by the engineers to consult instructional documents, drawings and manuals during their inspection work. This allows us to work even more efficiently.”

The two augmented reality applications were developed for Aegir Marine by specialist software developer Artishock.
