ABB power systems for new AIDA pair

ABB says it will supply complete electrical systems for both ships; including generators, propulsion , engine room and distribution transformers, frequency converters, bow thruster motors, and other related power system equipment, as well as its latest generation XO Azipods. This version of the podded propulsion unit is designed for energy efficiency as well as manoeuvrability in a variety of operating conditions.

ABB’s says that its delivery will help the ships maximise their fuel efficiency, speed and manoeuvrability, as well as provide a reliable power supply to improve the availability of onboard equipment – no doubt a prime concern, in the light of incidents affecting two diesel-electric ships owned by Costa Crociere, a fellow member of the Carnival Corporation. Each of the 125,000gt AIDA newbuilds will have a passenger capacity of 3,250, and will be the largest ships constructed for AIDA. They are scheduled for delivery in March 2015 and March 2016.
