Suitable for almost any kind of vessel, the solution incorporates rigid sails, solar panels, batteries, optimised weather-routing, and a smart decision support system developed by Hydrographic and Marine Consultants (HMC).

Trials on a 203,000 dwt Newcastlemax bulk carrier with a range of 24,300 nautical miles showed the solution to meet EEXI and CCI indices for CO2 emission reduction.

As part of the trial, Aurelia developed a CII calculator to assess the status of the vessel based on five annual sailings between Brazil and China.

The resulting solution proposes two investment steps for shipowners looking to comply with the CII index. The first is the installation of Solar Flatrack technology, batteries, and the SafePlan software developed by HMC. This first stage has been shown to reduce total CO2 emissions by 6.1% and MGO used by the auxiliary engine by 97.5%.

The second stage is the installation of six rigid, 30m high sails to provide supporting wind propulsion, along with switching from fossil to biofuels. This has been shown to reduce CO2 emissions by 10.3%.

The model is also suitable for general cargo and has been successfully installed on board Vertom’s MV Anna. Two 16m VentiFoils were installed last year and from this year Solar Flatrack are being tested and added to existing Vertom vessels.
