Air Products achieves maritime cybersecurity first

The certification, awarded under the International Association of Classification Societies’ Unified Requirements E26 and E27, addresses rising cyber risks affecting vessel monitoring, control systems and alternative fuels infrastructure across fleets.

Cyber resilience

The move towards certification comes as digitalisation, vessel monitoring technologies and connected onboard equipment, increase the likelihood of a cyber attack across commercial shipping.

According to a 2024/2025 cybersecurity report by DNV Cyber, 31% of maritime professionals reported at least one cyberattack in the 12 months leading up to October 2024, up from 17% five years earlier.

The figures underscore the growing operational and safety risks facing owners as systems linked to navigation, monitoring and alternative fuels become more integrated.

IACS UR E26 and E27 establish minimum cybersecurity standards for new vessels, covering both shipwide architecture and individual onboard systems. Compliance is intended to ensure equipment resilience against unauthorised access and system compromise.

Air Products, which installed the first membrane-based nitrogen generation system onboard a ship in 1984, said the certification reinforces its leadership in reliable marine nitrogen technology while advancing cybersecurity protection for its fleet.
