Aker Ostsee gets more feeders

Aker Ostsee shipyards in Wismar and Rostock-Warnemünde, a subsidiary of Aker Yards, has been awarded a contract to build two plus two container vessels for Thien & Heyenga in Hamburg, Germany. The vessels are of the newly developed type Aker CS 1700 and the total contract value is approximately $160 million. The contract for two of the vessels is subject to finance and delivery is scheduled in the second quarter of 2006 as well as in the first and second quarters of 2007.

The 1,706 TEU newbuildings will be 182 m long and 25.2 m wide with deadweight of about 24,200 tonnes giving a 1,250 TEU capacity based on 14 tonnes per TEU. They will also have 300 reefer sockets. A 12,600 kW four-stroke medium-speed main diesel engine will give a service speed of 19.5 knots.

The same yard has also secured a contract to build four container vessels of the type Aker CS 2700 for König & Cie. KG in Hamburg for a total cost of $212 million. The vessels are due for delivery between the first and third quarter of 2007. They will measure 221.6 m long, 29.8 m wide and have deadweight of 37,570 tonnes. With a total container stowage capacity of 2,741 TEU, the ships will also have 400 reefer sockets for FEU. Powered by a 20,580kW Wartsila RTA68T two-stroke diesel engine, these ships will have a service speed of 22 knots.
