Alfa Laval joins call for decarbonisation

The Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation, which was announced on 22 September in conjunction with the UN General Assembly and will be delivered to governments ahead of COP26 and MPEC 77, calls for policies and investments that will help the industry make zero-emission shipping the default choice by 2030 and fully decarbonise by 2050.

“We, our partners, our customers and others in the marine industry are working to achieve the decarbonisation we all know must happen,” said Sameer Kalra, president, Alfa Laval Marine Division.

“The private sector can and must work faster, but a global framework of policies, resources and incentives is needed to make that feasible,” he added.

The existing GHG Strategy of the International Maritime Organisation aims to reduce shipping’s annual GHG emissions by at least 50% of 2008 levels by 2050.

The Call to Action for Shipping Decarbonisation believes this does not go far enough and is therefore urging world leaders to commit to decarbonising international shipping by 2050, support industrial-scale zero-emission shipping projects and deliver policy measures that will make zero-emission shipping the default choice by 2030.

While technologies for zero-emission vessels exist, they need to be further developed and brought up to scale. Likewise, they need to become financially viable for shipowners to adopt.
