With the goal of strengthening its presence in the Gulf of Mexico, AMFELS was renamed on Monday to Keppel AmFELS, an action that officials hope will allow the company to participate more actively in the region.

“Our vision is to be a provider of choice and a partner in solutions to our customers in the Gulf of Mexico,” said Ho Cheok Yuen, president and CEO of AMFELS at the renaming ceremony held at the company?s headquarters at the Port of Brownsville. “This vision is bolstered by the strength of the Keppel Offshore and Marine group as we draw on the expertise and resources of our network of 16 sister yards worldwide.”

Since its establishment in 1990, Keppel AmFELS has built up its facilities and equipment to become the most known offshore shipyard in the Gulf of Mexico, officials said. The company builds and repairs oilrigs and platforms.

The company, one of the largest employers in Brownsville, employs more than 1,000 people in the area.
