Another cruise operator uses trim optimisation for fuel and emissions savings

The Italian cruise company has installed Eniram’s software onboard its ships Silver Shadow and Silver Whisper, to monitor dynamic trim and inform the crew about the optimum trim to maximise fuel efficiency and thus reduce emissions. The onboard installations are backed up by onshore capabilities to ensure consistency when crews change.

Eniram says that Silversea chose the system after learning about other operators using Eniram tools. Silversea expects to achieve fuel cost savings of at least 2%-3%, on an annual consumption of about 70,000t. The ships chosen to use the system are those travelling the longest distances and at comparatively high speed. They are equipped with the Eniram Vessel Platform (EVP) and Dynamic Trim Assistant (DTA) software, while data collected from the ships are analysed further by Eniram to help identify and realise additional efficiencies.

“Ships operate with big fixed costs so our aim as an operator is always to maximise efficiency,” explains Christian Sauleau, Executive VP of Fleet Operations at Silversea. “Fuel is one of the biggest costs, and prices have soared over the last two to three years so we are keen to keep associated expenditure under careful control.”

Eniram says that its dynamic decision support technology is used by more than 50 cruise ships, with a further 20 currently in the process of implementing the technology.
