Antarctic cruise ship refurbished

The work was carried out by Oceanwide Marine Services at Scheepswerf Reimerswaal in Hansweert, Holland. Plancius was built in 1975 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch Navy and was named Tydeman. She was paid off in June 2004 and purchased by Oceanwide Expeditions in 2006. The ship has been completely rebuilt and converted for 110-passengers. She complies with latest SOLAS-regulations and is classed by Lloyd’s Register.

Accommodation includes 53 cabins, restaurant/lecture room and a observation lounge with bar, and large open deck spaces. The ice-strengthened vessel measures 89m, has a breadth of 14.5m and a draught of 4.8m and is equipped with a diesel-electric propulsion system. The three engines generate 1,230 bhp each, giving the vessel a speed of 10 – 12 knots.
