Asry prospects healthy

Over 2.26 million dwt of vessels were repaired by the Arab Shipbuilding and Repair Yard (Asry) during the first three months of the year with all indications that the trend will continue, according to a company statement.

Some 43 vessels were docked for repairs and refurbishment, up 20% on the same period last year while sales are up 25% and forward orders over the second quarter are also looking healthy, according to the company.

Twenty-two international vessels and 21 Arab vessels were repaired. The high demand meant Asry repaired a variety of vessels including offshore rigs, construction barges, chemical carriers and livestock carriers, as well as dock gates and tankers. The demand for blasting and painting has been constant during the first quarter with just under 500,000 square metres of painting being completed and some 100,000 square metres of blasting undertaken. A total of 16 boiler repairs were completed. Steel repairs were also in demand with over 1,000 tonnes of steel being used.
