Astillero Barreras delivers Armas ferry

Volcán del Teide is the twelfth vessel built by Barreras for the ship-owner from the Canary Islands. Experience and advanced know-how have been put together to create the biggest and most powerful vessel ever built by Vigo-based shipyard.

Launched in Vigo last July, the 29,757gt newbuilding has the most powerful power plant ever installed at the shipyard in the shape of four MAN 8,400kW diesel engines delivering a maximum speed of 26 knots and a service speed of 24 knots. With a length of 175.7m, a width of 26.4m and a draught of 5,70m, the 4,850dwt vessel can carry 1,500 passengers, 350 cars and 1,850 lane metres for lorries.

Passengers can be accommodated in 124 four-berth cabins, four double-cabins and two four-berth cabins for disabled persons. In addition there are lounges with more than 500 reclining seats and luxury seats, locker rooms, a swimming pool, a nursery, a cinema, a laundry and a kiosk.

The new ferry will be principally plying between Huelva, Spain, and the Canary Islands. The crossing will take 28 hours and the cargo is expected to be mainly fish and fruit and vegetables. Three sisterships are being built at Barreras for deliveries in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The second vessel,
