‘Bergen Viking’ LNG retrofit completed

Four of the 95m vessel’s six diesel generating sets were replaced with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C6 generators. The LNG fuel containment system and control system manage two 150m3 fuel tanks configured for redundant propulsion and with crossover options on bunkering and supply lines.

The vessel supplies diesel and petrol along the Norwegian coast for state petrol company Statoil. It was delivered in 2007 and is part of Bergen Tankers’ six-strong fleet.

Kjell Olav Haugland, managing director of Bergen Tankers, said: “We are delighted to take over a renewed and more environmental friendly vessel. Reducing emissions is an obligation we take very seriously. With the Bergen Viking returning to service we are also looking forward to significant savings in operational costs.”

John Knudsen, president – commercial marine, Rolls-Royce said: “The Bergen Viking project demonstrates that LNG is an option not just for new vessels but can be successfully retrofitted into existing ships to deliver significant economic and environmental benefits for owners.”

Rolls-Royce has delivered 63 LNG-fuelled engines for ships to date. LNG engines reduce NOx emissions by around 90% while virtually eliminating SOx emissions and cutting CO2 exhaust by around 25-30%.
