Big bore order boost

Both MAN B&W and Wartsila NSD have picked up orders for their largest bore engines. MAN B&W has secured an order for eight of its 98 bore engines (five 10K98MC-C and three 7K98MC) from Costamare Shipping for propelling container ships which will be built at Hyundai.

The five 57,000kW (76,405 bhp) ten-cylinder MC-C units will be used for propulsion of a series of 6,300 TEU container ships while the three seven-cylinder MC will develop 40,060kW (53,700 bhp) to power 4,800 TEU vessels. After having the design for several years without winning any orders, the past few months has seen MAN B&W sell 15 of its largest engines. Not to be outdone, Wartsila NSD has sold 23 of its RTA96C engines and still holds the title of the most powerful diesel engine in the world with the 12-cylinder version. Of the engines on order or in-service, 17 are ten-cylinder, 54,900kW (73,593 bhp) versions, two are 11-cylinder, 60,390kW (80,950 bhp) and the last two top rated 12-cylinder units develop 65,880kW (88,310 bhp).

Wartsila NSD has also launched Sulzer RT-flex, its `intelligent engine`.
