Dismantling the RTA84 engine for repair

The project involves removal and re-installation of the aft section of a 2/2 crankshaft of 110 tons from a two stroke, eight-cylinder, water-cooled, super-charged, low speed Sulzer RTA 84 diesel engine of type. The work is estimated to take five months, and comprises:

  • Dismantling all pipe work, fuel lines and electrical cabling;
  • Dismantling cylinder heads, pistons, liners, crossheads, connecting rods, exhaust manifold, flywheel, turbo chargers which are to be removed and transported to the workshop.
  • Loosening the couplings between flywheel, crankshaft and propeller shaft.
  • Main engine frame of 250ton to be lifted by means of hydraulic jacks.
  • Crankshaft raised by means of hydraulic jacks, and the damaged aft section separated and slid out backwards by means of skids.
  • Damaged crankshaft section to be transported to hold number 6 and lifted out.

After receipt of the owner-supplied new crankshaft section, the section will be lifted back on board to be re-installed, and all parts and components to be re-assembled and reinstated.
