BMT and Austal forge strategic partnership

The enterprise-level agreement, effective this month, establishes a framework allowing Austal to access specialist naval architecture and engineering resources from BMT as project demands fluctuate. The arrangement is designed to provide greater flexibility during peak workloads while helping reduce schedule risks and maintain focus on core shipbuilding operations.

Under the partnership, BMT will provide ship design, naval architecture and technical integration services, creating what both companies describe as a scalable model for supporting growing shipbuilding requirements.

“This agreement means a great deal to us and reflects the strong mutual value we see in working with Austal,” said BMT managing director Graeme Nayler.

“Programme demands are intensifying, and the ability to rapidly scale capability is no longer simply a competitive advantage; it is becoming a program necessity.”

He added that the partnership combined ‘highly complementary strengths’, bringing together Austal’s position as Australia’s strategic shipbuilder with BMT’s independent maritime design, engineering and assurance expertise.

Austal executive vice president Sales and Strategy Oliver Morton said the agreement would enhance the company’s ability to respond to growing programme demands.

“As our shipbuilding programs continue to grow, access to scalable, specialist design and engineering support will help us respond with agility while maintaining focus on safe, efficient and high-quality shipbuilding delivery,” Morton said.

The agreement also creates a formal pathway for the companies to jointly pursue commercial vessel projects in Australia and international markets.

The collaboration marks a further evolution of a relationship that has expanded across both defence and commercial maritime sectors, supporting sustainable growth opportunities for both organisations while reinforcing Australia’s broader shipbuilding capability.
