Boosted performance for high-speed engines

Volvo Penta has announced a new range of 9-litre engines, the D9 Heavy Duty which is available in three power settings for propulsion ? 221, 261, and 313kW (300, 350 and 425hp) ? and as complete marine generating sets.

It is a 9.4 litre inline-six diesel which replaces both the seven and 10 litre engines for propulsion and marine auxiliaries. Systems include a completely new centre-mounted, twin-entry turbo, which allows pulse charging, and the EMS 2 electronic engine management system developed by Volvo Penta to meet future emission requirements. This monitors and regulates a large number of components in the engine while the engine?s fuel requirements are analysed with high precision up to 100 times a second.

The D9 can also be equipped with a completely new monitoring and management system that results in optimal capacity usage and enhanced safety in the engine room. This Engine Interface Unit (EIU) meets the requirements for monitoring and communication demanded for larger vessels and unmanned engine rooms. It also makes the integration and management of multiple installations in the form of propulsion systems and generator units, much easier.

The D9 requires only marginally more space in the engine room than Volvo Penta?s 7-litre engine. The basic design is very robust with a sturdy engine block and fully-cast cylinder head for maximum reliability and low vibration, while all important service points are easily accessed to facilitate daily inspections. It produces low exhaust emissions as a consequence of effective charge-air cooling, high-pressure fuel injection and electronic engine management. The engine will meet the general environmental requirements for Europe and the USA in the coming years.

Volvo Penta has also upgraded its D4 and D6 high performance, common rail engines for use in fast work boats. These are the most powerful sterndrive diesel engines now available for work boats and are also offered for inboard use. With new performance components and optimised turbos, the common-rail engines launched last year have gained 20% more power while achieving low emissions and noise

levels.

The D6-350 DP with Duoprop drive and 257kW (350hp), is the most powerful diesel sterndrive on the market. The engine is equipped with a mechanical compressor that produces a high charge pressure and thus maximum torque directly from low speeds. The D6-350 DPR is offered for really high speeds, the new DPR drive having been developed specially for speeds between 47 and 60 knots. Compared with the DP version it has a smaller lower housing that is optimised for high speeds and stainless steel propellers. The D6-370 for inboard installation is available with an electronically controlled reverse gear or V-drive. Despite its high power the engine is designed to emit low noise and vibration.

The new 3.7-litre D4-260 is a variant of the four-cylinder, 155kW (210hp) D4 and at 192kW (260hp) is said to be the most powerful four-cylinder diesel on the market. Common rail direct injection and four-valve technology contribute to the engine?s high performance. It is available for inboard installation and with Duoprop drive.
