BV joins pursuit of old tankers

BV has issued its own set of proposals to improve safety of old tankers. It echoes ABS?s call for computerised records, and adds that it wants computerised evaluation of the ship?s structure to identify critical areas at each Special Survey.

The computerised database would contain thickness measurements, details of coating condition, and any damage/repairs to the vessel. At each special survey a finite element analysis and fatigue evaluation of the structure would be undertaken to identify critical zones.

It also wants IMO regulations changed to require gas-free intermediate surveys, thereby allowing all cargo and ballast tanks to be closely inspected. In addition, it wants the top and bottom of all product tanks to be painted white, and Port State Control reports to be sent to class regardless of whether there are any faults.
