Cats get new injectors

Caterpillar has extended the use of its hydraulic electronic unit injectors (HEUI) to the 3400 and 3200 series engines. The system uses a hydraulic intensifier that magnifies the force of the high pressure hydraulic as it acts on the fuel and gives full injection pressure down to 40 per cent of the rated engine speed.

Control of the hydraulic oil is by a solenoid valve activated by an ECU allowing better engine mapping through electronic control, reducing consumption and visible smoke at part load. Power is increased by about 5 per cent and while there is an on-cost, Caterpillar says the cost per kW remains about the same.
