Chiller for marine distillate fuels

By cooling down distillate fuel, the chillers are claimed to ensure proper functioning of the ship’s engine, lower emissions and decrease maintenance cost of the engine and fuel pumps. Cooling the MDO will help provide longer durability of the fuel pumps in heavy sea conditions.

The company says that the lighter fuel oil grades have a lower viscosity then the HFO grades, so to let the distillate MDO reach a similar viscosity level as HFO, the fuel needs to be carefully cooled down.

During change-over, the temperature of the cooling process is critical, according to Heinen & Hopman. To avoid damage (thermal shock) to the fuel equipment, the temperature and the viscosity should be carefully monitored. The MDF chiller is based on the company’s H&H marine chiller as used in HVAC systems. The chillers are designed to be compact, efficient and light, and are equipped with temperature and viscosity control. The units can be customised, allowing their incorporation in any type of vessel.
