China builds two for Transworld

Dubai-based logistics and shipping firm Transworld has awarded a Dh293.6 million ($80 million) shipbuilding contract to China’s Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard for two feeder container vessels. The order is in line with Transworld’s aim to strengthen its fleet given the growing demand for cargo transportation by sea. The 175-metre ships are custom-built with two 45 SWL cranes and are designed with a maximum capacity of 1,740 TEUs and can travel at a speed of up to 21 knots.

The newbuildings will meet the requirements at different ports which include short sea routes providing weekly connections for container trade from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Colombo, and the Middle East to Jebel Ali, Colombo and Singapore.

“With trade in the Middle East region growing six to seven per cent annually, we can expect more increases in business activities within the region,” said S. Ramakrishnan, chairman of Transworld Group of Companies.
