Clever tech in development to allow efficient just in time arrival

The Blue Visby Solution comprises software, an operational system and contractual architecture, aimed at improving inefficient fuel consumption and reducing emissions of cargo ships that sail fast then wait near their destination.

In the shipping industry, vessels typically sail quickly to an area near their destination, then idle there until they can enter port, resulting in unnecessary CO₂ emissions.

Verification and validation

According to various stage of proof-of-concept research, including an analysis of 150,000 voyages by 13,000 freighters worldwide in 2019, using the solution would enable a reduction of cruising speed and standby time in 87% of voyages.

The software gives vessel operators an optimal arrival time, so that they can then successfully adjust the vessel’s cruising speed and reduce fuel consumption by using the most efficient route and speed to reach the vessel’s destination, with a potential average CO₂ emissions reduction of 16%.

It works using digital technology developed by NAPA Oy, a wholly-owned subsidiary of ClassNK, which is also the coordinator of the consortium, alongside Stephenson Harwood LLP, an international law firm with headquarters in London.

The Blue Visby Consortium has previously conducted verification towards implementation of the system using a fleet of gas and chemical tankers operated by Marubeni.

It was confirmed through this verification that CO2 emissions could be reduced by an average of approximately 15% over a total of 625 voyages of 68 vessels operated and chartered by the operator.

Subsequently, Marubeni and Blue Visby Services Ltd have since signed a letter of intent for the development of a prototype version of the software. Blue Visby Prototype/Chemicals, which the consortium is currently planning to develop, will be a pioneering basic model.

Multiple prototype versions are planned for development across various market segments with the participation of various stakeholders, with the aim of deploying the Blue Visby Solution as a neutral and independent platform for ship operators.
