CMA CGM places order for MeOH-fuelled series of 9,200 teu boxships

The order relates to a series of eight methanol-burning dual-fuel vessels. The order was placed on 9 September, according to the shipyard, and represents the largest order for methanol-fuelled vessels to date, with analysts estimating the contract is valued at close to US$1 billion.

The order extends CMA CGM’s orders of methanol fuelled engines for its fleet of containerships. In June 2022, CMA CGM placed its first order for 6 x 15,000 teu containerships equipped with dual-fuel engines capable of operating on methanol. In April 2023, CMA CGM placed an order for 12 x 15,000 teu containerships that will be capable of sailing on methanol, with Jiangnan Shipyard and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry (DSIC).

The order represents the first time that SWS has received an order for a methanol-fuelled vessel, extending the range of alternative fuel types that the shipyard can produce. The shipyard’s management and workforce has extensive experience with the delivery of dual-fuel LNG-fuelled vessels.

While the shipyard is best known in the container market for its construction of large and ultra-large container vessels, it has received over 34 orders for 7,000 teu container vessels since 2021, when it entered the segment. The order will be the first time that the yard delivers a 9,200 teu capacity design.
