Combination boiler for OSVs

The orders are for the company’s newly-developed and patent-pending electric combined hot water/steam boiler, which it says is proving to be a suitable choice for ships classified and equipped for ORO operation according to NOFO 2009 regulations. The combined boiler can additionally provide hot water for daily use. The NOFO standards have been developed by the Norwegian petroleum and shipping industry to ensure safety and efficiency in oil spill response operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

According to the company, standby vessels with oil recovery equipment permanently installed that are approved by the Norwegian authorities to cover emergency preparedness for several installations must satisfy the NOFO standard. ORO tanks for collecting oil spills must be equipped with a permanent heating system for recovered oil /emulsion, and must have a tank capacity of at least 1000-2000m³. The heating system is required in order to be able to pump out low-viscosity oils and emulsions.

A multipurpose platform ship normally has no requirement for steam onboard, hence boilers are not fitted, but Parat has developed its combined boiler to provide both hot water and steam as required for rapid oil recovery use. The company says it has sold over 50 of the boiler systems so far, and it claims they offer savings for both owner and shipbuilder by avoiding the need for separate boilers which occupy more space and are more costly.
