Cruise – The Superstar is born

The end of September saw Meyer Werft hand over the 76,800g cruise ship Superstar Leo to its owners Star Cruises a week earlier than planned. As the first of four cruise vessels under build at Meyer Werft for Star Cruise Superstar Leo is considered necessary to the continuing favourable development of the young cruise company which wants to strengthen its position as the leading Asian cruise line.

In addition to being important to the owners, the contract aided Meyer Werft`s determination to remain a leading builder of world class cruise ships and as an important contributor to the local economy around Papenburg. To underline this aspect, the transit of the ship down the River Ems from Papenburg was shown on the World Wide Web while more than 100,000 people actually watched the vessel`s passage.

Star Cruises opted for a diesel electric plant on Superstar Leo. The prime movers are four MAN B&W 14V48/60 medium-speed engines installed in two separate compartments. Each engine has an output of 14,700kW (19,705 bhp) at 514 rev/min and drives a synchronous ABB generator rated at 20,000 kVA and 6.6kV. Propulsion is by two ABB electric motors each with an output of 20,000kW (26,810 bhp) at 123 rev/min.
