Cummins gensets for crane barge
The barge is being built for Franklin Offshore International, an offshore service provider with headquarters in Singapore and facilities in Azerbaijan, USA, South Korea, Indonesia, UK, Australia, Malaysia and Qatar. Franklin works closely with oil majors; rig owners and offshore contractors, having grown from its origins in South-East Asia to have operations spanning five continents.
Cummins Singapore has been awarded the contract to supply the main power generation for the 240-man accommodation and work barge under construction at Jiangsu Jiaolong Heavy Industry Group (JHI) The 120m x 33.2m barge is fitted with six units of Cummins Power Set Model K38-CP765DM/5 each rated for 832 kWe. In addition to these six gensets a Cummins KTA19-D(M1) emergency generator has been installed, rated for 360 kWe. The new barge is classed ABS, Accommodation & Work barge, MODUS code for unrestricted services. The barge is scheduled to be ready to go to work in February of 2011.
Tier 2 compliance
Meanwhile, earlier in 2010 Cummins received a statement of compliance from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) certifying the QSK60 HPI auxiliary engine to IMO Tier 2 emissions standards.
The 60-litre, V-16 cylinder engine joins the line-up of IMO Tier 2 compliant propulsion and auxiliary engines from 78kW to 1925kW available from Cummins. The engine features the Cummins high pressure injection (HPI) electronic fuel system and the same lubrication, cooling, air handling and exhaust systems as the IMO Tier 1 product. The engine shares similar hardware with its predecessor including engine mounts, vessel connections and optional equipment, simplifying installation. While hardware and technology remained unchanged, a minor calibration change allowed for emissions reduction without significantly impacting fuel consumption.
Two ratings are available for auxiliary and generating set applications, 1563kW at 1,500 rpm and 1,900kW at 1,800 rpm, making the product suitable, according to Cummins, for diesel electric ship propulsion applications. Production was scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2010 at the Daventry, UK, engine plant.
