DHI ferry breakthrough
Korean yards are starting to make their presence felt in the international passenger/car ferry newbuilding market. Last month Samsung secured an order for two passenger/car ferries for Greece`s Minoan Lines. Now Daewoo Heavy Industries (DHI) has won a contract to build a 1,410 dwt roro ferry for another Greek owner, Strintzis Lines Shipping.
The vessel, which DHI is building for $27 million, will carry a maximum 1,500 passengers and 199 cars. It will operate at a service speed of 23.8 knots powered by two Wartsila main engines each developing 4,140kW (5,628 bhp).
