Diesel-electric : SSP secures second order

Siemens-Schottel has won a second contract for its propulsion pods (SSP)s – this time for two TT-Line ferries being built by SSW Fahr. Each of the 36,000g (2,685 lane-metre) ropax vessels will be propelled by a pair of 11MW (15,000 bhp) SSPs, giving them a service speed of 22 knots. At 11MW these will be the biggest permanently-excited motors ever built – double the power of the one built for Donsotank but well below the 30MW (40,800 bhp) maximum. The TT-Line vessels will have 30MW of installed power provided by five MaK engines (two 8M43, two 7M43 and one 6M32) each housed in a separate engine room within the double hull.

Siemens Marine Engineering will supply and install all the electrical machinery and systems as a turnkey contract worth around E41 million ($42.7 million).
