DNV GL hails launch of new rules

The rules are the result of a development and review process involving 250 internal experts and more than 800 industry stakeholders

After more than 2,000 comments from ship yards, manufacturers, owners, academics and flag states, the organisation has made 700 rule modifications

One major change is the introduction of equivalent design waves (EDW) to calculate environmental loads – a more cost-effective and precise method than full spectral analysis, requiring less computational resource

Modern tools and software have also been integrated, making the rules responsive to future developments

New technologies including battery installations and hybrid propulsion concepts, gas-fuelled readiness and LNG bunkering vessels are also supported through additional class notations

The rules simplify new designs by providing 38 defined ship type class notations, while any documentation and certification requirements are summarised throughout the rules
