Doosan develops measuring systems
South Korea’s Doosan Engine has developed a ship-engine main bearing’s abrasion measurement system and an advanced real-time measurement system of the condition of lubricating oil.
Doosan initially developed the measuring systems for local companies sold under its registered trademark of B-WACS (Bearing Warning and Control System) and O-WACS (Oil Warning and Control System) respectively.
Both systems have an annual combined market potential in South Korea of around KRW100bn ($82.5m) and Doosan expects to cut KRW16bn a year in import costs of the systems.
The B-WACS, a non-haptic distance sensor and a high-speed signal transaction device, can measure an engine’s main bearing’s wear and tear in real time. If a risk situation is detected during operation, a warning signal is sent alerting the shipowner who can carry out preventative maintenance thereby lengthening an engine’s life span and reduce repair costs.
O-WACS examines lubricant oil’s condition in real time. With semiconductor sensor and micromini temperature sensor, it can check oil’s water content and temperature in real time. When the water content increases, a warning signal is sent out.
