Doosan Engine breaks 60m bhp barrier

South Korea’s Doosan Engine, which specializes in building vessel diesel engines, achieved 60 million bhp in aggregate production recently

This milestone was reached in world record time, just 25 years after completing the first engine in 1984

.

Shop testing of a 93,000bph 12K98ME-C engine was completed at Low Speed Assembly Shop 1 on 19 August, officially raising the company’s aggregate production to 60,090,000 bhp

.

The engine will be mounted inside an 8,000 TEU containership under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries for Orient Overseas Container Line and is the 1,730th engine completed by Doosan Engine

.

The company’s output has increased by an average of around 22% per year since 2005 resulting in the aggregate production record, which broke 40m bhp in 2006, rising to 50M bhp in 18 months (in April 2008) and then topping 60M bhp just 16 months later, an industry record

Doosan Engine builds the main propulsion engines for very large containerships, bulk carriers and other commercial vessels and, as a result, the average size of the engines built by Doosan is 35,000 bhp, around 26% larger than the figure posted by other engine makers
