Windship Technology's Zero Emission concept combines a triple-wing aerofoil with a patented exothermic carbon capture approach

The solution for bulkers and tankers was voted the winner of The Motorship Editor’s Award by delegates at the conference. The wind assisted propulsion solution features a triple-wing aerofoil with a wider Zero Emission shipping concept.

Graham Harvey introduced the triple-wing rigs, which feature trailing edge flaps that allow for optimisation of the motive force produced for a variety of incident wind angles.

Turning to the Zero Emission concept, he announced that the solution, which incorporates a diesel electric drive featuring a full carbon capture system that dramatically reduces fossil fuel consumption whilst eliminating NOx, SOx and particulate matter and zero CO2.

Harvey also announced at the Propulsion & Future Fuels conference that classification society DNV had just completed an independent computer-based analysis of the concept’s emissions abatement potential.

Using the COSSMOS analysis modelling suite for the drivetrain and based on the information provided, DNV assessed that Windship Technology’s solution captures 100% of the CO2 generated whilst providing 49% fuel savings of the expected fuel consumption of an Aframax Tanker.

DNV previously awarded an Approval in Principle (AIP) to UK-based technology developer Windship Technology for its triple-wing aerofoil in September 2021.
