DSME to build new Royal Navy tankers

DSME and partners will provide specialised design and build of the new logistic support vessels, to be operated by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary. The contract will be worth about £452 million, including a significant value for sub-contractors and partners. As part of the RFA fleet, the MARS tankers will offer logistical support to the Royal Navy by providing fuel, food and fresh water to naval vessels at sea. The vessels will each be just over 200m in length, 28m in beam, and have a displacement of over 37,000 tonnes. This new addition to the fleet is due to be in service with the RFA from 2016 onwards.

The winning bid combines the Aegir design from BMT Defence Services with DSME’s shipbuilding experience, and according to DSME the project will exploit the economic efficiencies of the largest shipbuilder, whilst retaining UK capability, knowledge and skills in ship design and engineering. Commercial build and outfitting practices will be adopted for the MARS tanker, to deliver an efficient, high quality build process.

The BMT-Aegir platform has been optimised for the requirements of the Royal Navy and RFA. The hull design that meets the latest marine environmental regulations and adopts design principles that are common with the latest Royal Navy platforms. DSME and its partners have refined the design in conjunction with equipment suppliers.
