EEDI certification for Carisbrooke ships

The vessels – Vectis Eagle, Falcon, Harrier and Osprey – have been designed by Dutch naval designers, Groot Ship Design, to make use of efficient energy. The vessels’ Groot Cross-Bow are suitable for all weather conditions and reduces vessel pitching and load fluctuations, resulting in less wasted energy and fuel. As well as the high bows, ducted propellers have been designed to work with the hydro-dynamically optimised hull to significantly reduce power requirements and operate as efficiently as other similar vessels. As a result, a derated 2400kW main engine has been fitted to the vessels which further reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Dr Pierre C Sames, senior vice president of research and rule development, GL, said: “Our calculations show that these new vessels are some 30% below the reference EEDI line, which is a reflection of the commitment that Carisbrooke has made to invest in an extremely efficient vessel.”

To further reduce their environmental impact, the vessels have also been equipped with two electric 80t cranes, electric winches, water lubricated sterntubes and biodegradable oils.

The EEDI certification is due to come into force in 2013.
