Experts to analyse the impact of ETS extension

Separate questions surround the accuracy of the EU’s MRV emissions recording system, as well as reporting at sea.

The vote risks undermining IMO efforts to develop consistent global rules. There is a risk that a patchwork of national and regional environmental regulations could emerge, raising technology development costs for OEMs and ultimately for ship owners.

And no less importantly, there are questions about whether the EU’s proposed solution would be effective. Will the EU’s proposal help shipping to achieve existing targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2050, as agreed at the IMO’s MEPC72 meeting in 2018. Emissions from aviation have risen since the industry was brought within the scope of the ETS, for example.
