Exploring cylinder condition challenges

The event, held at the SMM marine technology exhibition in Hamburg yesterday (5 September), was attended by engine developers, fuel experts, ship owner associations and ship operators. The theme was ‘data driven cylinder condition strategies for a complex future’.

Industry preparedness for the IMO’s 2020 fuel sulphur rule was a key subject of discussion. So too was the importance of monitoring engine performance and cylinder condition after the introduction of new fuel types compliant with the global sulphur cap.

“Sulphur compliance and the associated technical challenges are some of the biggest and most immediate uncertainties facing the industry,” said Gavin Lipsith, editor, The Motorship. “The roundtable was a welcome opportunity to discuss those complexities – and some of the digital solutions that may offer peace of mind for ship owners.”
