Explosion relief valves for gas and dual-fuel engines
According to Austrian company Hoerbiger, explosions may occur in intake manifolds and exhaust lines as well as in the piping system of ship engines, when gaseous fuels are used.
Together with leading engine manufacturers the company has developed explosion relief valves series EVT and EVM.
The EVT and EVM series valves are designed to protect man and machine against the consequences of gas explosions in dual-fuel and gas engines. The EVT has especially been designed for high pressure ranges. It is equipped with disk springs and is used in the intake manifolds and exhaust lines of dual-fuel and gas engines.
EVM valves are intended for low pressure ranges. They are fitted with multiple coil springs and are installed in the exhaust gas lines of dual-fuel and gas engines and the down-stream piping systems.
All Hoerbiger explosion relief valves are said to be designed for even discharge and distribution of the heat which arises after an explosion when the flame front passes the flame filter. Tests have proved that the valves are effective in reducing intensity of explosions.
The valves are virtually maintenance free. Unlike bursting disks the valve is not destroyed during an explosion. It is immediately serviceable again. A plant shut-down is not necessarily required. Due to the flameless pressure relief discharge into confined compartments is possible.
